In the late morning we set out for Kaikoura. We stopped for a picnic lunch by the River Hurunui, south of Cheviot. This was an unexpected delight, with large numbers of black-fronted terns skimming over the river (and some pied stilts standing close by). Once at Kaikoura, staying as in 2007 at the delightful Bay Cottages in South Bay, we wandered around for an hour ot two, both in South Bay and on the Kaikoura side of the peninsula. We then had a wonderful dinner by the road at the crayfish van (chowder, garlic scallop sandwiches, and crayfish fritter sandwiches). Everything was just as magical as we remembered it. |
